Hastings running coach attempts world record at London Marathon in Morris dancing costume
A Hastings-based running coach is attempting a world record at the London Marathon — running the full 26.2 miles dressed as a Morris dancer.
A local running coach is taking on one of the London Marathon’s most unusual challenges this year — attempting a world record while dressed in full Morris dancing costume.
Rhys Boorman, who runs RB Running and Wellbeing in Hastings, is aiming to beat the current record for the fastest marathon dressed as a Morris dancer, which stands at 3 hours 48 minutes and 28 seconds.
Rhys said the idea came about after a change in circumstances earlier this year.
“I had an entry to the London Marathon but after my second daughter being born I realised I wouldn’t be able to put in the training to get a quick time, so I decided to combine both my hobbies — Morris dancing and running.”
Despite the added challenge of running in full costume, he is confident of beating the record.
“I am pretty confident… barring any catastrophic problems I believe I should be able to do at least 3.10,” he said.
Rhys is even aiming significantly faster, with a target time between 2 hours 50 and 2 hours 55 if conditions allow.
Training in the outfit has brought its own difficulties.
“The hardest part of training in the costume is the heat of the clothing but also chaffing around the neck as I have to wear a collared shirt.”
To prepare, Rhys has been testing the kit in real conditions, including an Oxford Parkrun where he finished first in a time of 16 minutes 51 seconds while wearing the full outfit.
He has also completed further test runs, including longer distances along Hastings seafront, to understand how the costume performs over time.
As part of the record attempt, Rhys is asking spectators along the London Marathon route to help capture evidence of his run.
Photos are required at each mile to verify the attempt, meaning supporters could play a key role in helping him secure the record.
Alongside his marathon challenge, Rhys runs RB Running and Wellbeing, offering running coaching and support to help people improve performance, fitness, and overall wellbeing.
The London Marathon takes place on April 26.
